Storyline:
An uplifting feature documentary highlighting the transformative power of art and the beauty of the human spirit. Top-selling contemporary artist Vik Muniz takes us on an emotional journey from Jardim Gramacho, the world's largest landfill on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro, to the heights of international art stardom. Vik collaborates with the brilliant catadores, pickers of recyclable materials, true Shakespearean characters who live and work in the garbage quoting Machiavelli and showing us how to recycle ourselves.

An inspiring film about art and a community surrounding an incredible art project. Vic Muniz had a vision and a group of impoverished workers in Brazil made that vision come to fruition. Can only repeat the word inspiring in my explanation of this film!

Waste Land was a fabulous documentary. The culture of the largest dump in Brazil was fascinating and the resulting artwork incredible. Grab your recycling and go see it!

The theme and project it's important and beautiful but the way they described and talked about Brazil and the people there in the place of waste, its really waste of time. Its good to see how can we look to a different reality without any responsibility. For me who was born in Brazil, I just like to say: NO, its not about poverty like you show, please if you are going to say something, say it looking better for the things.

I have been a fan of all things Brazilian since my first trip there in 1977. I discovered family in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro during this time and now speak Portuguese which I find useful and practical inasmuch as I travel to Brazil frequently. This movie continues to reinforce the incredible Brazilian culture and mentality which seeks to always make the best of seemingly insurmountable obstacles. The very real people depicted in this film and how they transform their lives serve as object lessons for all of us. As a former classroom educator, I see immense value in having middle and high school students view this film. Like the recyclable materials found in the largest landfill on earth, there is much here for the creative teacher to discover together with his or her students.
